Download Time Calculator

Estimate an upload or download from a known file size and transfer rate. Compare decimal and binary storage units without confusing megabits and megabytes.

Estimate transfer time

Enter the file size and a positive transfer speed. Select units carefully: MB is bytes and Mbps is bits per second. Usable bandwidth is the share available for the transfer: 100% uses the whole rate, while 80% uses four fifths.

Result

Enter your inputs and run the tool.

Method and assumptions

Time in seconds = file size in bits ÷ (transfer rate in bits/second × usable bandwidth ÷ 100). One byte is eight bits. Decimal kB/MB/GB use powers of 1,000; KiB/MiB/GiB use powers of 1,024.

Worked examples

400 MB at 5 Mbps, 100% usable

The estimate is 640 seconds, or 10 minutes 40 seconds.

1 GB at 100 Mbps

At 100% usable bandwidth the estimate is 80 seconds. At 80% it is 100 seconds. A zero-size file takes zero seconds in this model.

Limits and useful checks

This tool does not measure connection speed. Latency, protocol overhead, storage speed, congestion and rate changes can increase actual time. Enter a realistic usable share; it is not an automatically measured loss rate. Numeric results are estimates, not delivery promises.
